The data the Facebook Data Team collected is based on words and phrases in U.S. status updates.

Surprise, surprise; results from a Crowd Science survey reveal social media users want to be heard! I thought humans in general liked to be heard, at least to be given attention anyway. In fact I don't know of anyone that doesn't like being noticed, do you?
45% of the Crowd Science Respondents indicate they like being noticed on social media. 36% believed that others are simply interested in what they have to say.
Other interesting results from the survey indicate that women are more than three times likely to say online social media was their favourite leisure activity.

Nielsen Wire has released some interesting statistics that indicate Facebook was the third most-visited destination of internet users over 65, trailing behind Google and Windows Media Player.
This figured has jumped up the chain, with last years results plotting this social media site at number 45.
The mediums social media usage for this demographic has increased 53% in the past two years. In February of this year, women in the 55+ demographic were identified as being Facebook's fastest growing audience.

With Facebook announcing their 350 million user status, it is little wonder that social media and an effective strategy for 2010 is on my mind.
It is somewhat amusing, yet frustrating, to come across so many business fan pages on Facebook, or to read twitter feeds that scream 'Buy from me now!'. It seems that often the 'social' part of social media is ignored - instead companies seem to be treating it as just another source of direct advertising.
