Recently an article on Harvard Business Publishing was brought to our attention; Three Instantly Effective Social Media Ideas. The article provided ideas for businesses on how to generate feedback from their customers and target markets online.
The article's ideas were as follows:
A suggestion box: Invite your customers, supporters or employees to submit their ideas and suggestions for new products, services or improvements.
Widget: Create an interactive badge your customers or supporters can place on their Facebook pages or blogs.
Deal of the day: Create an online presence that lets people know about a special, time-limited offer.
The article's suggestions to businesses identified the narrow-minded thinking that some markets apply to social media engagement. Social media isn't about a business; it's not all about YOU! This type of online engagement won't continually captivate an audience, or sustain over a long period of time.
Social media isn't primarily about a business; it's about giving the customer an opportunity for an online voice. Listening, not constantly voicing.
What's your social media presence? Are you offering your customers a voice online? Are you listening?

I completely agree... people join online communities and engage with favourite brands and businesses online to have a say, contribute to ideas, express opinions and to hear what others like/dislike.
The true value in social media for businesses is not 'fast quick sales' - it is much more valuable than that. It is hearing about how you can improve, what people love about you, and spreading your message/business/idea.

Social media isn't an 'instant' fix.
Social media engagement is about building trust, and building trust takes time.
No wonder there are so many abandoned Facebook and Twitter profiles - these businesses obviously expected a quick fix, quick response, quick sales and so forth.
Social media and the concept of online networking needs to be understood before a business charges in all guns a blazing.
