Maureen Heymans and Murali Viswanathan from Google's official blog explains, "The way we do it is by building a social circle of your friends and contacts using the connections linked from your public Google profile, such as the people you're following on Twitter or FriendFeed, your Gmail chat buddies, contacts, groups. and websites from your subscriptions as part of your social search results."

Google's Social Search Demonstration

Google Social Search brings content from a user's social circle to the forefront, displaying a friend's or coworker's take on a restaurant rather than (or in addition to) local newspaper reviews. This concept adopts recent statistics - 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations, only 14% trust advertising messages to amplify a user's exposure to peer recommendations.

Future advancements to Google's social search functionality means now more than ever, brands need to monitor user generated content about their brand to actively take advantage of online opportunities and respond to negative content.
